In the Fall of 1997, Wednesday evening activities were called Wednesday Night Live. The idea of having a meal prior to these activities was considered as a convenient way for our church family to be fed before the meetings, choir practice, etc. The Casburn Family, Julie, Tracy, Tyler and Stephanie took on the challenge and named the meal Bistro. Their first team of volunteers was there each week for the first three years. Meals were served in china dishes and glassware which required washing and putting away each week.
Price of the meal was established at $4.00 for adults and $2.00. Attendance grew quickly to between 100 and 130 people. With the Casburn’s careful planning and shopping, the surplus that accumulated provided the money to buy the refrigerator and freezer for the Fellowship Hall kitchen.
After the Casburns time of service, there were two or three interim cooks until we got Larry Hudson, member of University UMC to take the responsibility each week. At that time, the idea came to ask each adult Sunday School Class to take on the responsibility of providing helpers to set up, serve and clean up on one Wednesday each month on a rotating basis. The Bright Corner, Upper Room, Wesleyan, Covenant-Koinonia classes rotated each week with the Open Door serving on 5th Wednesdays. Larry stayed with us for five years and decided to retire in February 2007.
The Casburns were asked to consider taking the responsibility once again. They did and joining them as a regular volunteer each week is Claudia Roper. The Sunday School Classes continue to do their duties on their designated Wednesdays.
